Dear Hiring Manager,

I would like to work for DTE Energy as a lab assistant for producing the harmless substance which gives natural gas a specific and special smell.  About a year ago I heard on the radio that DTE Energy has made a lot of improvements in their safety department, they put some chemical compounds in the gas to make a specific smell to alarm a person if there was a leak in the house or building.  Natural gas is odorless and colorless it is hard to notice a gas leak from before and that caused lots of accidents in the past.  Inserting this harmless substance has helped people all over to stay safe and sense danger around them.  Moreover, as a junior chemical engineering major at Wayne State University, making this chemical compound is of special interest of mine.

I’m sure I can help make the natural gas have a distinctive smell as well as not loosing its flammability.  I have taken a lot of chemistry classes including organic chemistry and material energy processes.  I have finished my organic chemistry labs, and I gained some experience on making reports after each lab of what we did and what results we saw.  All the classes that I have taken up till now have prepared me for this specific job from almost anything thrown at me.

In college while taking my chemistry labs I had to work with different people every other day and deliver a report by the end of that day, so it required a lot of teamwork and patience.   My previous jobs have no relevance to this particular job, but I learned a lot and developed good communication skills since the majority work of that job was interacting with multiple people from diverse background.  The most important duty that was assigned to me by my last employer was satisfying customers need by obeying the business environment.

I’m sure you have realized from a letter and resume can say only a little about someone’s qualifications, and I was hoping to discuss this more in person about what I can contribute to DTE Energy.
